Named after lime-kilns located by the Thames.

Location: Limehouse, E14

Description: Limehouse is a place in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is on the northern bank of the River Thames opposite Rotherhithe and between Shadwell to the west and the Isle of Dogs to the east.

However, where did such a strange name come from...well the name relates to the local lime-kilns located by the river and operated by the large potteries that served shipping in the London docks. The earliest reference to Les Lymhostes occurred in 1356.

Most of the lime produced went into London's buildings - so now you know.
