Ripper's First Victim

Ripper's First Victim

The first likely Jack the Ripper victim.

Location: Durward Street, Whitechapel, E15

Description: 'Jack the Ripper' was the alias given to an unidentified serial killer (or killers) active in the largely impoverished Whitechapel area and adjacent districts of London, England in the latter half of 1888.

But deaths and murders there were...

Victims were women earning income as casual prostitutes. The Ripper murders were perpetrated in a public or semi-public place; the victim's throat was cut, after which the body was mutilated.

Prostitute Mary Nichols, was found in a gateway in what is now Durward Street but which was then Buck's Row, on 31st August 1888. Her throat had been severely cut and she was lying on her back, with her clothes disarranged.

It has been said by many a tour guide that a ghostly misty figure can be seen at certain times of the day, lying motionless in the gutter where 'Jack's' first victim was found murdered.
