HMV's first Celebrity Opening

HMV's first Celebrity Opening

HMV's first store in London, and first celebrity opening.

Location: 363 Oxford Street, W1Y

Description: The first HMV was opened at 363 Oxford Street in 1921 by composer Sir Edward Elgar.

This was the first known instance of a celebrity opening a retail outlet, and Edward seemed as good as any.

Customers had to make appointments and were received in 'salons' to listen to the latest releases...now that is rather civilised.

Later in 1961, the Beatles cut their first demo at the in-store studio, but alas by 2000, the Beatles were no more and nor was this pinnacle store. It moved three doors down to 360 and this legendary location became a Footlocker of all things! Will they never learn...
