Did Cromwell cross the road
Since 1871, this pub was built opposite Cromwell's house.
Location: 33 Whitehall, SW1A 2BX
Description: The area around this pub has altered many times over the years but old maps do throw up items of interest.
An ordnance survey map of 1871 indicates a public house on this site - the present day 'Silver Cross' - the same map indicates the 'site of Oliver Cromwell's house' on the other side of the road...maybe a bit late for him to have popped in!
Indeed, if you still want to witness a little of what once was, the Silver Cross has managed to preserve aspects of times gone by within.
The pub was licensed as a brothel by Charles I.
