Hanging Gardens of Paddington

Hanging Gardens of Paddington

World's largest hanging basket outside a London hotel

Location: 16 London Street, W2 1HL

Description: The 20ft by 10ft basket, which contains over 100 different varieties of plants and flowers, has been called 'The Hanging Gardens of Paddington'.

It weighs more than a quarter of a tonne, took over three weeks to create by a team of designers, engineers and gardeners and eight hours to winch into position.

The floral display includes thousands of pounds worth of species including orchids, roses, ivy, daisies, gerberas, ferns, conifers and moss.

The basket hangs 25 ft from the ground and was created to mark the opening of a new boutique hotel in Paddington.

'Hotel Indigo' will change its decor in line with the seasons 'to keep it feeling brand new and interesting for guests'.

The 125 pounds-a-night hotel is the chain's first outside North America.

Karin Nielsen, a spokesman for the hotel, said: 'Our new hotel is all about unique design, bold colours and seasonal changes, so what better way to mark its arrival in the UK than by creating the world's largest hanging basket?

'We've taken our inspiration from the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the world, and hope that our hanging garden will become a wonder of London.'

And Karin's not wrong!

Although the hanging basket is gone, the Hotel Indigo is open as of January 2009. Im staying there now, sending this comment via the WiFi connection which is included in the room rate. Its cheap (as London hotels go), cheerful, and colourful! (TheatreManiac)
