A very Special Building
A pioneer work in the history of modern architecture in England
Location: 233 High Holborn, WC1V 7DN
Description: It's probably worth pausing here to admire the confident inter-war building on your right.
This was once the site of an internationally known firm of bookbinders, the proprietors of which, a Mr and Mrs Tregaskis, were summoned to Windsor Castle in 1894 to show off their products to Queen Victoria.
The building was purpose-built in 1930 for Sir William Crawford to house his advertising agency, and is described by Pevsner as a 'pioneer work in the history of modern architecture in England'.
Alas of course not everyone approved and Crawford had to defend himself against charges that the building was 'teutonic'... well really!
