River Police Boatyard

Home to the worlds first uniformed police force

Location: Nr Wapping Rose Garden

Description: The Thames River Police was established in 1797 and was the first uniformed police force in the world.

At the time crime was a major problem on the river and was one of the reasons for building the inland docks enclosed by high walls.

Today the main problems are stolen yachts and attempted suicides. The blue and white building houses the police boats and provides maintenance facilities.

The present headquarters is just up the road and houses a museum (visits by appointment only).
