Artist James Barry died here
The place where Irish painter James Barry lived and died.
Location: 36 Castle Street, Oxford Street, London
Description: This is where celebrated Irish painter James Barry (11 Oct 1741 22 Feb 1806) lived and finally died. His major work The Progress of Human Culture, is a series of six monumental paintings of historical and allegorical subjects done for the Great Room of the Royal Society of Arts, London.
Infamously, he was the only member ever expelled from the Royal Academy and his controversial views were considered a threat to the political and artistic status quo, despite, ironically, his own hopes of securing royal patronage.
James Barry is now regarded as perhaps the most important Neo-classical painter of eighteenth century Britain.
