Thames Ironworks

Thames Ironworks

The famous ship building yard and origins of West Ham FC.

Location: Bow Creek, Canning Town

Description: The famous ship builders The Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, Limited had their shipyard and ironworks here. Many Royal Navy ships were built here such as the high profile HMS Warrior and HMS Minotaur.

Following the downturn in naval construction after 1900, the lack of new orders forced the yard to shut in 1912.

It's football team however continued - Thames Ironworks FC had changed their name to West Ham FC in 1900. Their emblem of the crossed hammers represents riveting hammers used in the shipbuilding trade - thus their nickname of The Hammers.
