The headquarters of pioneering catalogue company Freemans.
Location: 131-143 Clapham Road, Clapham
Description: In 1937, after some exceptional growth in the mail order business, Freemans, the largest catalogue business in the UK, moved from Lavender Hill to this building. At this time it had 30,000 agents in the UK.
In 1940 the building was bombed and 23 members of staff were killed, and severe damage included almost total destruction of the company's records.
The were the most pioneering mail order company in the UK installing their first computer in 1963 and in 1979 introducing telephone ordering for agents.
In 2007 the building was redeveloped and partially demolished ready for it's new opening in 2010 with apartments styled in fifties and sixties themes like the hit US show Mad Men.
