Dorset Square: Home of Cricket?
The original site of the Lord's cricket ground before relocation
Location: Dorset Square, Marylebone
Description: This square was once the ground of the MCC, Marylebone Cricket Club, who were founded in 1787. In 1811, this land was owned by Thomas Lord, a Yorkshireman who decided to sell the St Marylebone Cricket Club and it's pitch. They moved everything including the turf to the now world-renowned Lord's, but if they'd stayed put it could have much nearer central London!
Dorset Square as it is now was the central feature of an urban layout planned by the Portman Estate (1815-20) after it's acquirement from Lord. The square has changed little architecturally since.
