First Aborigine in Europe

The grave of the first Australian to set foot in England.

Location: St John's Churchyard, Eltham, SE9 1DH

Description: This is the oldest burial site of an indigenous Australian in Britain - it's the grave of Yemmerrawanie (sometimes spelt Yemmerrawanyea), a 19-year-old native of the Eora tribe who died on May 18, 1794.

He arrived with fellow aborigine Bennelong and they were the first indigenous Australians to visit England. They arrived in London from the fledgling Colony of New South Wales aboard the Atlantic in 1793 and were presented to King George III by Governor Philip.

However, within a year Yemmerrawanie was dead.

His headstone reads: In Memory of Yemmerrawanyea, a native of New South Wales, who died the 18th of May 1794, in the 19th year of his age.
