Whistler's Half-Sister
This is where artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler once resided
Location: 62 Sloane Street
Description: This is where artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler lived briefly in 1858 and completed several etchings as well.
From November Whistler stayed with his half sister Deborah and her family here. She was the daughter of George Washington Whistler and his first wife Mary Roberdeau Swift. In 1847 she married Francis Seymour Haden, a surgeon, collector and etcher. They had four children, Annie Harriet, Francis Seymour, Arthur and Harry.
He first learned etching while attached to the United States Coast
and Geodetic Survey. Francis Haden was a gifted amateur etcher, and Whistler developed his technique when they went on etching trips together.
His first subjects here included his niece Annie Haden in At The Piano, his sister Deborah and the still life The Wine Glass. He also depicted the family in his etching The Music Room.
He had also made a number of studies of
the Haden children here while recovering
from a fall in the spring of 1858.
Haden kept a press on the top floor where they printed plates of their etchings for publication.
