Morrissey & Marr call time
Johnny Marr called a Smiths meeting here to leave the band
Location: 2 Farmer Street, London, W8 7SN
Description: 'The Smiths' were the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s.
Formed in Manchester in 1982 and based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey (vocals) and Johnny Marr (guitar), the band also included Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums).
The Smiths were simply brilliant and it came as some surprise to Morrissey, Rourke and Joyce back in April 1987 that guitar legend Johnny Marr called a meeting at this very restaurant - 'Geales Fish Restaurant' - to call time and decide to leave the band.
Morrissey agreed at the time but... 'didn't think he'd pull the plug'... going on to say... 'I didn't think he'd really do it'!
A sad day, but at least they left us a sparkling back catalogue with the wit and wisdom of Morrissey coming to light alongside Marr's genius melodies!
