The Phoney Houses
22-23, due to tube build are flat fronts with no house behind.
Location: 23-24 Leinster Terrace, Bayswater, W2
Description: The first tube in London was Paddington to Farringdon in 1863. Demand soon grew so new lines had to be made and houses brought up. These houses would be demolished, the tube dug, and then covered again. Some property agents wanted a high price, most notably in Leinster Terrace, Bayswater. So as well as paying to knock down two splendid looking houses, the train company reconstructed the fronts only, making them look like real houses instead of film props. Today thousands go passed with out ever noticing that 22-23 are just flat fronts with noting behind.
A famous hoax in the 1930s saw a cheeky fraudster make a small fortune by selling 10 guinea tickets for a charity ball here. It was only when the excited guests - in full evening dress - knocked on the fake door they realised they're folly!
