The Cardinal

The Cardinal, a pub dedicated to the Catholic Church.

Location: 23 Francis Street, Westminster

Description: This old pub, a stones throw from Westminster Cathedral has a long history of connections with the Catholic Church. It's been a traditional meeting place for parishioners and groups from Westminster Cathedral for decades. It's also been given a collection of paintings, drawings and photographs of several different cardinals who served the Catholic Church in London - among them Cardinal Hume and Cardinal Manning - who negotiated in the Dockers Strike of 1889.

The managers of the pub, Samuel Smith Brewers, are currently refurbishing the pub and have announced that when it reopens it's name will inexplicably be changed to the Windsor Castle. A campaign is underway by the Catholic Church and Anne Widdecombe to keep the name.
