Local Grove Park pub saved from demolition by campaign.

Location: 368 Baring Road, Grove Park

Description: This grand pub, closed now since a fire in August 2009, had been threatened with demolition but given a reprieve in September 2011 by Lewisham Council. They've granted it a listed status after a concerted campaign by locals, fans and even Stephen Fry.

Developers had wanted to turn it into shops and flats.

It was originally built as part of the Earl of Northbrook's estate in 1882 and is an early design by well known architect Ernest Newton.

Stephen Kenny, part of the environment sub-committee for nearby Ringway Community Centre, said: This building is of national and local importance. Newton is an esteemed architect along with William Morris and others from the arts and crafts movement. The building is one of Newton's early works and shows a valuable timeline of progression. Would one destroy an early Picasso?
