Mulberry House and Poitier
To Sir With Love was inspired by this school and filmed here.
Location: 226 Cable Street, Tower Hamlets, E1 0EW
Description: This recently restored Georgian mansion was once St George's in the East School and later Mulberry Girls School, and today 34 boutique apartments.
This is one of the schools where the Guyanese writer E.R. Braithwaite taught. Braithwaite was an engineer who, despite having served as a bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force in World War 2, could not get a job because of his colour.
He then trained as a teacher. His experiences of teaching were set out in the book To Sir With Love.
The 1967 film adaptation of To Sir, With Love starred Sidney Poitier as a new teacher starting with a post in the tough East End. The film deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school and was partially filmed here at Mulberry House.
