Author Nevil Shute was born and raised here in Ealing.

Description: On 17th January 1899 author Nevil Shute Norway was born here in West Ealing, London. The Young Nevil attended a prepatory school in Hammersmith but at the age of 11, Nevil was sent to the Dragon School at Oxford after playing truant at the South Kensington Science Museum.
Incidentally, for fans, this is also the home of character Keith Stewart in Trustee From The Toolroom but it was called number 56 in the novel.
When the Easter Uprsing took place in Ireland in 1916, Nevil was spending his holidays in Dublin, where his father had been appointed Secretary to the Post Office in Ireland. For acting as a stretcher bearer, Nevil received a commendation.
Nevil went to be an engineer, racing driver, and managed to write 24 novels and an autobiography. His catalogue includes the classics On The Beach and A Town Like Alice.
