John Profumo's Townhouse
The house where John Profumo was living when the scandal erupted
Location: 3 Chester Terrace, Regent's Park
Description: This striking Grade-I listed neo-classical townhouse was completed in 1828 by James Burton to original designs by John Nash. It was first occupied by Burton and remains the longest unbroken facade in Regents Park (about 280 metres).
It was owned later by a leather merchant, a stockbroker, a 'fishmonger and foreign lake ice-maker'.
In the 20th century this was home to Lord Gerald Wellesley 7th Duke of Wellington and John Profumo. John Profumo and his wife Valerie Hobson were living here in 1963 when the Profumo Scandal erupted forcing his resignation was secretary of state for war under Harold MacMillan's government.
The terrace takes its name from one of the titles of George IV before he became king, Earl of Chester. Today it features an extensive wine cellar, cinema and enchanting garden.
