Whisky-a-Go-Go and WAG
Legendary club WAG was here.
Location: 33 Wardour Street, Soho
Description: In the 1960's this was a hip RnB club, in the 1970's this was Whiskey-A-Go-Go a new romantic, underground pre-punk club, and since the 1980's it has been hedonistic clubland legend called WAG. Today it's gone, it's an O'Neills pub.
The Who and Jimi Hendrix hung out and jammed here. The Fine Young Cannibals, Tom-Tom Club, Beastie Boys, Bananarama and Sade played here. Hip-hop legends Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa played their first UK gigs here, while Irish Pogue Shane McGowan was clobbered onstage with a guitar by his co-singer Caitlin.
Boy George, John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier, George Michael, Neneh Cherry, Michael Clark and Leigh Bowery have all danced here.
Musician-turned-club-promoter Chris Sullivan and two business partners bought the lease in early 1981 and opened it as antidote to the vanilla pop clubs elsewhere in the West End. It had nights for jazz, funk, disco or reggae - a different vibe every night.
Soon there were queues down Wardour Street as a hip young crowd of art students, musicians, designers and shop assistants.
Tours: Libertines, Oasis, Alcohol.
Tours: Jimi Hendrix's London
