The Scala
The Scala, one of North London's iconic venues.
Location: 275-277 Pentonville Road Kings Cross
Description: This was originally the Kings Cross Cinema and built to the design of H Courtney Constantine, but completion was put on hold for the First World War. The partially completed cinema was commandered to manufacture airplane parts, and after 1918 as a local labour exchange for demobilized soldiers returning from the war. The Kings Cross Cinema opened in April of 1920 seating over 1000 people.
Today the Scala is a beautiful multi-purpose venue split over four floors and accommodating events for as many as 1,145 people. There are 3 bars, 2 dance floors and a stage for live performances.
Many musical greats have played here including Iggy Pop, Chemical Brothers, Kruder & Dorfmeister The Doves, Dido, Outkast, Lionel Ritchie, Stereophonics, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Suede, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Moby, Hawkwind, Super Furry Animals, Gomez, Elbow, Robbie Williams, The Rapture, Hanoi Rocks, Gary Glitter, Kelis, Kosheen, Chicane, The Scissors Sisters and Joss Stone.
It was briefly a planetarium in 1980 but always enjoyed screening films in some guise.
