Artist William Etty lived here

The house where Sir Humphrey Davy worked on his discoveries.

Location: 14 Villiers Street, Charing Cross

Description: Between 1824 and 1826 Sir Humphrey Davy rented the basement here, while living in Grosvenor Street. He used this basement as as a workshop in which to carry out his experiments on the prevention of the corrosion of the copper sheathing on the bottoms of sea-going vessels. He contributed to the discovery of Sodium and other alkaline metals.

The year he moved on, was the year celebrated painter William Etty moved in to the top floor, where he displayed many fine works and sculptures, until his death in 1849.

The 3rd floor at that time had another celebrity in residence, the former stage painter turned lanscape artist Clarkson Frederick Stanfield.
