Description: Everard Richard Calthrop was an engineer with a background in railway engineering and he masterminded the Barsi Railway in India and the Barbados Railway.

On 12 July 1910 Calthrop was present when his friends Charles Rolls, founder of Rolls Royce, died after he lost control of his biplane and crashed. That and a similar, non-fatal, accident involving his son Tev, led Calthrop to invent and patent some of the very first parachutes.

In 1916 Calthrop also patented an ejector seat for aircraft pilots using a new method of utilising compressed air.
