The few remaining buildings of Henry VII's great Richmond Palace
Location: The Wardrobe, Richmond
Description: This is the best remaining part of Henry VII's former Tudor Richmond Palace. It is on the site of an earlier Sheen Palace which was destroyed by fire at Christmas 1487.
Henry VII was formerly known by his title Earl of Richmond, and the palace was named as such.
Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I died here.
After Charles I's execution, Richmond Palace was sold by the Commonwealth Parliament and by the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 little of the building was left standing. This though was the Gatehouse - built in 1501.
Today it's accomodation with five bedrooms and was let on a 65 year lease by the Crown Estate Commissioners in 1986. The arms of Henry VII have been restored and can be seen above the grand gateways arch.
As you pass through the arch you enter Old Palace Yard which was once the Palace's great Outer Court. Look towards your left and you can see the only other remaining Palace building - the original Wardrobe building.
