Moor Park Golf Club
Moor Park Golf Club home to Sir John Betjeman's awful tee shot.
Location: Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire , WD3 1QN
Description: Moor Park Mansion at Moor Park Golf Club is a splendid Grade I listed Palladian mansion set within over 300 hundred acres in Hertfordshire.
The original house dating from 1678 was built for James, the Duke of Monmouth.
It was redeveloped after 1732, which was when Benjamin Hoskins Styles, who had made his fortune in The South Sea Company. The magnificent paintings in the Main Hall, Thornhill Room and Grand Staircase can be traced to his time here.
There are two championship golf courses both designed by Harry Colt in 1923 with an eye to blend into the grounds of the estate.
They were made famous by being featured in Sir John Betjeman's London-based documentary Metroland. Sir John demonstrates tee-ing off, with a disastrous tee-shot - cue the laughing. Probably the highlight of the fascinating documentary.
