Sir John Gielgud's birthplace
The birthplace and childhood home of actor Sir John Gielgud.
Location: 7 Gledhow Gardens, Earl's Court, SW5 0BL
Description: This is where, on 14 April 1904, Arthur John Gielgud was delivered by a family friend, Dr Henry Huxley.
The house, where he and his 2 brothers and sister, was a tall, narrow building, with four storeys and a basement. Spacious and comfortable, it overlooked a square with a large garden.
In his autobiography he noted The house was very draughty, and there was never enough hot water for the baths, but I loved every inch of it.
His boyhood idol was his great-aunt Ellen Terry, the greatest actress of her age.
