The Faraday Memorial
The quirky memorial to local electricity pioneer Michael Faraday
Location: Elephant and Castle Roundabout
Description: The odd Michael Faraday Memorial is a monument to the Victorian scientist who lived nearby.
The striking stainless steel box-shaped structure was designed by Brutalist architect Rodney Gordon in 1959. Two years later it was installed here on the centre of the northern roundabout of the depressing Elephant and Castle gyratory system.
It's Grade II listed and contains rather suitably the London Underground electrical substation for the Northern Line and Bakerloo Line. It was formerly intended to be glass encased but that was never going to last, so steel won it in the long term.
