Nunhead Cemetery

Nunhead Cemetery

A Victorian gem of a lesser known London cemetery.

Location: Linden Grove, Nunhead, Southwark

Description: Nunhead Cemetery is one of the seven Victorian cemeteries in London and probably the least known.

It's 52 acres opened in 1840 and it's the second largest Victorian cemetery in London. An Anglican chapel overlooks woodland while ash and sycamore trees conceal headstones, angels and impressive gothic tombs.

After an extensive restoration project funded by Southwark Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, it was reopened in May 2001. Fifty memorials were restored along with the beautiful Anglican Chapel, designed by Thomas Little.

Towards the North entrance is the obelisk dedicated to five 18th century political reformers who put the cause of political justice before their own lives and became known as the 'Scottish Martyrs'.

Part of the cemetery is now a haven for wildlife, supporting a diverse range of both native and exotic plants, and 16 species of butterfly.
