John Christies House of Horror

John Christies House of Horror

The location of John Christie's long gone house of horror.

Location: Near Barton Mews, Ladbroke Grove, London

Description: It was somewhere here, where the Westway now stands, that John Christie lived in a house at the now demolished 10 Rillington Place.

When he left this house, the next tenant found a body papered into the recess in a wall. The police found 5 more bodies including his wife and unearthed evidence that he helped secure the erronous hanging of his neighbour.

His next door neighbour Timothy Evans, a man of limited intelligence, was found guilty (with evidence from Christie) of murdering his wife and child and hanged. Thus making this one of the worst miscarriages of justice in legal history.

Christie himself was hanged and it took 9 more years before Tim Evans was pardoned.

John Hurt and Richard Attenborough played them in a rather good film shot partially at the same house, called 10 Rillington Place.

10 Rillington Place was later renamed 10 Ruston Close until the street was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the Westway urban motorway, and the street was rebuilt as Bartle Road. The site of 10 Rillington Place is now a small garden.

I think this Christie was a really bad ass guy who thought he could get away with " murder " pardon the pun. The bomber would take him out anyday. He shat himself when he saw the legend Doc . Bring him on , Young Branny !!! (John Spencer ! Y.B.T )

I too am intrigued by this murder case, slightly macabre I know but I felt the need to investigate further and contacted the philmore library in kensington who were most helpful. I have visited this area, which you would never guess a murder had been committed. A new housing estate has been built here and dare I say it looks quite tranquil and peaceful. Also nothing to do with Ruston Mews gated area opposite Bartle Mews (john naylor)

Evans story since my dad told me the story when I was a kid, Im 50 now, and still it intrigues me. Ive read Eddowes book - The Two Killers of Rillington Place - I thought it was bunkem. Christie killed those women and little Geraldine. There was some legal trouble between Ludovic Kennedy (the author of the greatest book on the subject), and Eddowes, which resulted in changes being made to later editions of Eddowes book. I think Eddowes is a fantasist. Christie was an evil man who let young Tim Evans hang. (Annie)
