Site of Durham House
Splendid Durham House used to be here, site of Anne Boleyns end.
Location: Durham House Street, Strand, London
Description: Durham House Street and John Adam Street now occupy the area that was once Durham House and its grounds. Henry VIII requisitioned the property from the church for his own purposes, and it was in the cellars which are still here today that he locked up Anne Boleyn after she had failed to bear him an heir.
Many Bishop lived here, but also Simon de Montfort, Catherine of Aragon, Cardinal Wolsey, Princess Elizabeth (afterwards Queen Elizabeth I), and Sir Walter Raleigh.
After the Civil War it fell into disuse, and it was not until 1768 that the celebrated Adam brothers took a lease on the site and began to develop it as the Adelphi.
