Charles II 's Special Road

A special route home for the King, and his subjects.

Location: King's Road, SW3

Description: Indeed, the 'naval of swinging London' in the sixties, the King's Road still has that special thing. Ultra-fashionable at the time, the King's Road is an excellent shopping street that starts on the beautiful, tree-lined Sloane Square.

But it did serve a more interesting purpose around the time of Charles II (the King) in the mid 1600s. In fact he used the road to travel from Whitehall to his palace at Hampton Court.

Originally a twisting path beginning at Eaton Square, subjects of Charles II were also able to use the road but only on production of a pass stamped with the words - 'The King's Private Road'.

What a pass!
