Description: This is where female swimming legend Agnes Beckwith was born on the 24th August 1861. Fer father was a swimming teacher and introduced her to the local Lambeth Baths at a very early age.
She hit the publicity trail with her exploits making front page news, especially those that brought female sport and endeavour to a wider and new audience.
Swimming the Thames for 5 miles was rare, especially for a woman and aged just 14! She was lauded for her ever-improving targets and knew how to market her talents taking her troupe around the world.
