Londons 1st Fish and Chip shop
This is where London's first fish and chip shop used to be.
Location: 78/80 Cleveland Way, Bethnal Green
Description: This is where young apprentice Joseph (Joe) Malin, 13 years old, masterminds London's first ever fish and chip shop. It is likely that he and his family began making fish and chips in their home and then young Joe would sell them on the street. They likely had a fishmonger's shop here and sometime after 1860 turned it into a fish and chip shop.
In the 1891 census he is listed as a fishmonger, as is his wife, and his daughter a potato peeler!
