Charing Cross Hotel

Charing Cross Hotel

A great place to view London whilst standing at the bar.

Location: Strand, WC2N 5HX

Description: This has to be one of the best places in London to get a drink - I'm certain the hotel is first class, but it seems the view as you sup your pint may be even better.

The Charing Cross Hotel was designed by Edward Middleton Barry (built by the Lucas Brothers) and first opened for business on the 15th May 1865 a year after the station itself opened. The front was ornate in a French Renaissance style and featured 250 bedrooms spread over seven floors down Villiers Street as well as fronting the Strand.

This Grade II listed hotel was formerly called the Amba Hotel Charing Cross and today it is part of the Clermont chain of luxury hotels.

The public rooms had fabulous balconies overlooking the station concourse and it quickly became popular, leading to a 90-bedroom merger on the other side of Villiers Street opening in 1878 and connected by an overhead walkway.

There's a selection of historical museum-like items relating to the hotels history on the first floor.
