Brunel's Hidden Bridge
Brunel's hidden bridge was discovered inside this bridge.
Location: Bishops Bridge, Paddington, London
Description: This is where in 2004, a lost bridge by Isambard Kingdom Brunel was found encased within Bishops Bridge.
The unique structure, which dates back to 1838, was hidden for decades within a modern brick road bridge over the canal next to Paddington Station and rediscovered as part of the Paddington Bridge Project.
Dismantled in 2004, the bridge is now stored in English Heritage's yard in Portsmouth until the 3 million needed to restore and re-home the historic structure can be raised.
This is the earliest of maybe ten iron bridges by Brunel to survive - its design is unique and it represents a turning point in Brunel's thinking, in particular in his structural use of iron.
