Rector William Webb-Ellis invented the great game in mid 1900s

Location: St Clement Danes Church, Strand, WC2R 1DH

Description: It was from here in the mid 19th century that the rector William Webb-Ellis inadvertently invented the great game that is Rugby.

It was whilst playing a game of football that the tall sturdy man caught the ball, and 'with a fine disregard for the rules of the game as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive features of rugby'!

Well I never, at the time I'm certain he got some strange and angry looks, but in hindsight the boy did well!
