Description: 2010 Mercury Music prize winners The XX went to this same Putney comprehensive as members of Fleetwood Mac, Hot Chip, So Solid Crew and the Maccabees.

They chose their name here while mucking about on a computer keyboard. I just liked the letter x, says guitarist Romy Madley Croft. Madley Croft and Oliver Sim began writing songs over iChat and in break times here.

Madley Croft said I wouldnt say its a particularly renowned school for music. Its a really standard, really small music department. We did music for GCSE. I started out doing drum lessons, then I swapped to guitar. If the teacher was teaching somebody the piano, wed ask if we could go and practise our instruments in the other room.

Other famous alumni who went to this school include Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green, Four Tet's Kieran Hebden, nu-folkie Adem, dubstep artist Burial, and crooner Matt Munro.
