Location: North Walthamstow, Hale End

Description: This granite memorial stone celebrates the life of Rodney (Gipsy) Smith MBE (1860-1947) who was born in a tent and raised in a Gypsy camp near this stone. His family made a living selling baskets, tinware, and clothes pegs locally.

He never attended a school and yet he influenced the lives of millions of people all over the world through his revivalist preaching.

Converted in 1876, he then served with General Booth as an officer with the Salvation Army until 1882. He was an early member of the Salvation Army. He then became an itinerent evangelist working with a variety of organisations all over the world.

During World War I he ministered under the auspices of the YMCA to the British troops in France, often visiting the front lines.

As a result of this, King George VI made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Stricken by a heart attack, he died on the Queen Mary on a cruise in America, age 87.
