Mina Loys Childhood Home

Modernist poet and artist Mina Loy lived here from age of 10.
Location: 68 Compayne Gardens, Hampstead, NW6 3RY
Description: In 1892 Sigmund Lowy moved his young family here to this 3 story brand new townhouse. His eldest daughter Mina was 10 at the time and Mina Loy (born Mina Gertrude Lwy; 18821966) would become a modernist artist, writer, poet, playwright, novelist, painter, designer of lamps, and bohemian.
Loy became fascinated with both Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Christina Rossetti, the Pre-Raphaelites, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones among others.
In 1897 Mina attended St. John's Wood School for about two years, later describing it as the worst art school in London and a haven of disappointment.
A year later she successfully applied for a place in Munich Universitys Society of Female Artists' School.
