The Great Wood Street Fire
The scene of a famous of fire that destroyed the whole block.
Location: Wood Street, Cheapside
Description: On the Friday morning of December 8th 1882, a massive fire broke out here in the cellar of Foster, Porter and Co. wholesale hosiers. Within 20 minutes nearly all the properties between Wood Street, London Wall, Philip Lane and Addle Street (about 380x150 feet), were utterly destroyed. An estimated 2m in damage was caused.
Only Curriers Hall, wedged in by the other buildings, miraculously escaped with minor damage because of its thick walls and fireproof roof.
With hindsight the fire of course was a blessing in disguise and the old buildings could (within 2 years) be rebuilt from scratch in a much grander style.
