Sothebys
The auction house expertly pranked by Banksy.
Location: 3435 New Bond Street
Description: Sotheby's is a British-founded broker of fine and decorative art, jewellery, and collectibles.
Sotheby's started life on the 11th March 1744 by bookseller Samuel Baker and in 1767 became Baker & Leigh. After Baker's death in 1778, the business was left to Leigh and his nephew John Sotheby, and became a prominent literary-focused auction house and subsequently renamed Leigh and Sotheby.
In 1917, Sotheby's relocated from 13 Wellington Street to this location at 3435 New Bond Street. They branched out into fine arts with breakthrough lots and soon came to rival Christie's as leaders of the London auction market.
Sotherbys was the unwitting auction house when Banksy painting Girl with Balloon was sold in 2018 for 1m and immediately began shredding itself. The defiled item was renamed and was then sold again at Sotherbys (without incident) in 2021.
