Clarence House
One of the last remaining aristocratic townhouses in London.
Location: 8 Cleveland Row, St James, , SW1A 1BA
Description: The first occupant here was William Henry, the Duke of Clarence, who it was built for and named after. He lived here from 1827 with his wife, Queen Adelaide and when he became King William IV in 1830 he decided to remain in Clarence House rather than Buckingham Palace.
After William IVs death in 1837, Clarence House passed to the King's unmarried sister, Princess Augusta, until she died three years later. Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, took over the house in 1841. Her daughter and grandchildren would often visit nearby Buckingham Palace.
Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria's second son, moved in here in 1866, and made many changes including changing the entrance to the South. The Duke's wife was daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and he installed a Russian Orthodox Chapel here on the first floor for her (later removed in 1900).
Clarence House became the London home of the young Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh, following their marriage in 1947, until her accession as Queen in 1952.
Princess Anne was born here in August 1950.
The Queen Mother, moved in to Clarence House with her daughter, Princess Margaret, shortly before the Coronation in 1953. The Queen Mother greatly enjoyed hosting receptions here and all foreign Heads of State called here for tea in the afternoon of their first day of a State Visit.
