St Augustines Tower

Hackney's oldest standing building dating to the 16th century.
Location: St Johns' Church Gardens, Hackney
Description: St Augustine's Grade I listed Tower is Hackney's oldest building and is all that remains of the 16th century church St Augustine's Church.
The Knights Templar are supposed to have built the first here in the 13th century.
In the 1790's nearby St John of Hackney's Church was built and the rest of St Augustine's was demolished.
A fine working 16th century turret clock has been on the third floor of the tower since at least 1608.
