The Lord Derby and Football
How to find out the scores before technology...
Location: 89 Walmer Terrace, Plumstead
Description: This struggling East End boozer has a pioneering football history. Fans of Woolwich Arsenal, who used to play very close to here in Plumstead had a novel way of finding out the scores from away games before the telephone, tv, teletext and the internet had come along.
They used to gather at the Lord Derby pub in the late 19th century and telegrams were sent to the landlord (who was a shareholder in the club and advertised in the official programme) and he read out the scores as they happened to the waiting crowds.
