Brighton in London
A Pimlico cafe with a rich history and cinematic pedigree
Location: 17-19 Regency Street, SW1P 4BY
Description: The 'Regency Cafe' is what people think of when they imagine a 'proper greasy spoon'.
Decently priced, tasty grub, formica tables, gingham curtains, a rattling coffee machine and London cabbies sucking up industrial strength cups of tea.
Okay, so it's 50 years on now, but the Regency hasn't seemingly changed much from that socialist post war ideal, albeit that the brickie can't have a smoke after his ham, eggs and fried slice.
It's even got a film pedigree now!
'Brighton Rock' is a 2010 British film based on the Graham Greene novel of the same name. Rowan Joffe wrote the screenplay and directed the film, which stars Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Serkis, John Hurt, and Helen Mirren.
The novel was previously made into a film in 1947 by the Boulting brothers under the same title. Although the novel and original film are both set in the 1930s, the 21st century adaptation takes place in Brighton and is set during the Mods and Rockers era of the 1960s.
Riley plays 'Pinkie', the role originally played by Richard Attenborough. It was largely filmed in the nearby town of Eastbourne, with Eastbourne Pier standing in for Brighton Pier, and at Beachy Head. Some scenes were shot at Hedsor House in Buckinghamshire and in Brighton itself.
And so to the Regency Cafe...parts were shot here in Pimlico too!
