Waterloo Bridge

Waterloo Bridge

This is the bridge with the finest views of the city.

Location: A301, Waterloo Bridge

Description: The current Sir Giles Gilbert Scott bridge between Waterloo and the Strand was partially opened on Tuesday 11 March 1942 and eventually completed in 1945. It has been known as the Ladies Bridge because of the large number of female workers employed in it's build. It's been grade II listed since 1981.

The first bridge here (toll-fee required) was opened in 1817 and built by John Rennie. It soon became suicide central and also in 1841, the American daredevil Samuel Gilbert Scott was killed while performing an act hanging by a rope from a scaffold on the bridge.

Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was stabbed with a poisoned umbrella on the bridge in 1978, and died a few days later.
