London: Tornado capital?

London: Tornado capital?

Tornado hits North London and 150 homes with 130mph winds.

Location: Whitmore Gardens, Kensal Rise, NW10

Description: According to Dr. Thomas Meaden of the Tornado and Storm Research Orgnisation, Britain is the world's tornado hotspot relative to its size...which means that London could well be the Tornado capital of the world.

Well, based on the storm that hit North London on Thursday 7th December 2006, you'd be a fool to deny the claim.

At around 11am the sky went black and seconds later the darkness lifted to reveal the damage caused. 130mph winds with 150 houses in its path, the tornado uprooted trees, shifted cars across streets, took out walls of houses, planted wheelie bins in hedges... Amanda, a shopkeeper, said 'It literally was the Wizard of Oz...it was just sucking things up into it. There were tiles, bits of wood, trees!'.

It is claimed this sort of weather is the stuff of things to come...is there nothing Great Britain can't do?
