Description: 'Withnail and I' is a British black comedy film made in 1986 by HandMade Films. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson, it is based on his life in London in the late 1960s and is a now cult classic and the focus of one or two 'drinking games'.
The main plot follows two unemployed young actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and 'I' (Paul McGann) who live in a squalid flat in Camden in 1969 while waiting for their careers to take off.
Needing a holiday, they obtain the key to the country cottage in Cumbria belonging to Withnail's flamboyantly gay Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) and drive there.
The holiday is less 'recuperative' than they expected.
And so to this location... West House, 35 Glebe Place, Chelsea - in the film, this was the home to Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) who made sordid advances to 'I' (Paul McGann) after Withnail (Richard E. Grant) used him as bait to secure their holiday in the country.
This is a simply superb film with some classic performances and one-liners.
