Palace of Westminster

The House of Commons and the Houses of Parliament

Location: Westminster, 1

Description: The Palace of Westminster (also known as the Houses of Parliament) is the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Todays New Palace dates back to 1840, after the old medieval cluster of buildings (the Old Palace) were destroyed in the fire of 1834.

The first royal palace on the site dated back to the 11th century, when Westminster was the primary residence of the Kings of England until fire destroyed the royal apartments in 1512.

Today the Palace is one of the centres of political life in the United Kingdom.
